Current wireless charging technology isn’t capable of filling batteries as quickly as high-speed plug-in systems, but do offer a convenience for overnight home charging.

However, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory recently demonstrated a 120-kilowatt system that would qualify as fast-charging and is developing a 270-kilowatt system that could potentially charge a vehicle’s battery up to 80% full in 15 minutes.

Tesla last year acquired a company called Wiferion, which has previously specialized in wireless charging systems for industrial vehicles like forklifts.

Tesla has often been on the forefront of charging technology. Its early models were designed for battery-swapping, but the success of its Supercharger network of public stations made that idea unneccessary, and now all major automakers have chosen to make their vehicles sold in the U.S. Supercharger-compatible.
