General Motors has unlocked access to Tesla’s Superchargers for its electric vehicles.

All GM EVs can now use Tesla’s network, but require a $225 NACS (North American Charging Standard) adapter to make the connection.

Charging sessions can be initiated through each of the GM’s brands apps, which can also help find stations.

Not all of them work with the GM vehicles yet, but 17,800 out of around 28,000 in the U.S. and Canada are ready to go.

Most owners will get a notification on their app letting them know their vehicle is compatible through an over-the-air update, but some early Chevrolet Bolt models will need to have the necessary software installed at a dealership. Information on buying an adapter is also available on the app.

“GM’s ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future,” Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy, said in a news release.

“Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.”

Future GM models will come from the factory with the NACS-type plug, which is being adopted by other charging networks and automakers, but it hasn’t confirmed which will be the first to have it. These will then need a CCS (Combined Charging System) adapter to use stations with that type of plug.

Ford and Rivian models became compatible with the Supercharger network earlier this year, while Hyundai is set to become the first automaker other than Tesla to equip its vehicles with the NACS-type plug as standard equipment when the new Georgia-built Ioniq 5 goes on sale later this year.

Rivian is providing the adapters free of charge, while Ford is doing the same for customers who reserve one before Sept. 30.
