The Summer Olympics may be the fastest ever.

Organizers are currently contemplating what sports that aren’t currently permanent fixtures will be added or brought back, and the equestrian events may be joined by a different type of horsepower.

Reuters reports that motorsport has made the shortlist with baseball/softball, lacrosse, breakdancing, flag football, cricket, karate, kickboxing and squash.

It would mark the first time that motorsports was officially included in the Olympics, but not the first time it’s been adjacent to it.

MORE ELECTRIC CAR NEWS FROM AMERICAN CARS AND RACING

There were auto racing events positioned alongside the games during the 1900 Paris Olympics as part of the Exposition Universelle trade fare that was also taking place, and the 1992 F1 race outside Barcelona was advertised as the Grand Prix of the Olympic Games, coming just weeks before the city hosted the Olympics.

The FIA motorsports governing body has been pushing for racing to be included and organized exhibition electric karting races during the 2018 and 2020 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Lausanne, Switzerland.

It’s not clear what class of motorsport is under consideration for Los Angeles, and the FIA media office has not responded to a request for comment from American Cars And Racing.

Of course, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that is set to co-host the opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events is no stranger to auto racing.

NASCAR has held its season-opening Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum on a temporary quarter-mile paved oval for the past two years.

While it’s unlikely that the venue or NASCAR Cup Series cars would trump track, NASCAR has been discussing the potential launch of an all-electric series that could fit the bill at a U.S. Olympic Games.

Perhaps eight-time sprint gold medalist Usain Bolt will have to come out of his retirement and see if he can live up to his name behind the wheel.
