The Acura ZDX is getting an unusual second act.

Which seems fitting for an unusual car.

The 2010 ZDX was one of the early SUV coupes and sported a radical design for the day.

It never caught on with customers and was discontinued a couple of years later with just more than 6,000 sold in the U.S.

Now the ZDX name is back on an electric SUV that will be on sale early next year.

The 2024 ZDX is a collaboration with General Motors and built on a version of the Ultium electric vehicle platform that underpins the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which will also be used for the Honda Prologue electric SUV that’s arriving next year.

The ZDX is nearly as long as a three-row Acura MDX, but only has seating for five. The styling isn’t as relatively wild as the original’s, but it is modern and sports a more traditional, upright SUV roofline.

The entry-level A-Spec trim will be powered by a 340 hp single electric motor that’s good for 325 miles of driving between charges. A dual motor all-wheel-drive A-Spec will be offered, along with a high-performance Type S model with a 500 hp all-wheel-drive system, 288 miles of range and computer-controlled adaptive suspension for improved handling.

Although it’s meant to be the driving enthusiast’s choice, the Type S will be equipped with the AcuraWatch 360+ hands-free highway driving system. It’s based on GM’s Super Cruise and works on over 400,000 miles of North American highways, where it uses mapping and sensors to drive the car within a lane and execute passes as long as the driver is watching the road, which is confirmed through facial scanning.

The ZDX’s infotainment system also features the Google Built-In app suite, but unlike GM’s upcoming models, Acura has retained Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smarpthone integration.

Prices for the ZDX are expected to start around $60,000 for the A-Spec and $70,000 for the Type S. Acura has not yet announced exactly where it will be built, but has confirmed it will be in North America.
