The Nissan Frontier May Be On A 25-Year Mission
The Nissan Frontier is the undisputed “oldest new pickup” on sale today.
With the coming arrival of an entirely redesigned Toyota Tacoma, the first since 2005, the Frontier is the new elder statesman.
It traces its roots back to the same year but, like the Tacoma, has been updated a few times since. Most recently in 2022.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a solid truck with a fresh look and modern features, such as adaptive cruise control, which is great on long rides. And it may need it, because a new report suggests that the current Frontier is in for a longer haul than expected.
Automotive News reports that the midsize pickup was originally set to be replaced in 2027, but that a note sent to suppliers informed them that the date has been pushed to 2029.
Nissan hasn’t confirmed the news, but the supplier that shared the information speculates that it’s because the Canton, Miss., factory that builds the Frontier is going to be transformed into an electric vehicle production facility, and launching an all-new internal combustion engine truck simultaneously might not make a lot of sense.
It’s possible, then, that the Frontier will reach it’s 25th year in production before it finally gets replaced, perhaps by an electric model. Silver Anniversary Edition, anyone?

In the meantime, the Frontier will be holding down the fort for Nissan’s truck division, as the full-size Titan is officially set to be discontinued next summer.
