Climb To The Cup Series: NASCAR Developing Youth Ladder System

(NASCAR)

NASCAR is in the early days of developing a youth ladder system that will offer up and coming drivers a path toward reaching the upper levels of American stock car racing.

Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy, told Sports Business Journal they’re looking at the different ways drivers make it to the Cup Series — through various dirt and asphalt series — and how NASCAR could create a clear system for young drivers to follow, like many other sports have.

“For us, it’s about really thinking, ‘What are those paths they took to get to the Cup Series? What does it look like today? Can we be part of that path from bookend to bookend in the future?”

Below the top three national series, NASCAR is already involved in a number of lower tier series under the NASCAR Roots banner that includes ARCA, the Whelan Modified Tour and the Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series.

NASCAR entered an agreement with USAC last year to create the NASCAR Youth Series quarter-midget championship for drivers age 5-16.
