Roy Langlitz amassed one of the most famous collections of American muscle cars, but you may not know it was his.

Langlitz’s cars were once featured in Hot Rod magazine, but he didn’t want everyone to know about it, so the article used the pseudonym Rob Carter.

It was no secret to his friends in Idaho, however, and he often showed off his wares at local car shows and events.

Langlitz, an entrepreneur and U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, died at age 89 in January and the collection is going up for auction in Rathrdrum, Idaho, on September 16.

Many are in excellent shape, while others are project cars at best, and thousands of parts are also on offer. Online bidding has opened and the cream has already started rising to the top.

A 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe with a 427 V8 and just 45,942 miles on the odometer that’s been in storage for 20 years has already been bid up to $87,000 and three more second generation Corvettes have bids of $30,000 or more.

More than 40 El Caminos are on the docket, most in rough condition, but one standout is a running 1970 SS that’s had its 396 V8 swapped for a 527 cubic-inch crate motor.

Without question, the most unusual car is a 1956 Dodge Coronet Lancer with a custom paint job that pays tribute to New York Yankee pitcher Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series.

Larsen retired to Idaho and was a good friend of Langlitz until his death in 2020.
