Hybrid Ford Ranger 6X6 Is A War Machine
Ford this week revealed its first hybrid Ranger pickup in the U.K.
The midsize truck is a plug-in hybrid that offers up to 28 miles of all-electric driving.
It hasn’t been announced for the U.S. yet, but an all-new 2024 Ranger related to the global model sold in in other countries will be shipping to dealers as soon as the UAW strike is over.
It’s not the only hybrid Ranger for sale, however.

Defense contractor Ricardo has developed a Ranger HEX 6×6 conversion for military use that features a unique hybrid powertrain. The truck was designed to carry heavy loads over difficult terrain, and has a payload rating of 8,377 pounds. The conversion is a bolt-on kit that adds a third axle with an integrated electric motor and battery pack that rides on a De Dion suspension.

It’s a “through the road” hybrid setup that charges the battery through the rotation of the wheels on that axle, rather than electronics connected to the diesel engine or conventional drivetrain. It’s able to add an extra 282 hp to the V6’s 250 hp. Ricardo said an unpowered axle can also be added that turns the truck into a 6×4 with improved payload.
Interestingly, Ford itself recently filed a patent for an add-on third axle with power that was uncovered by CarBuzz, but is different than the Ricardo setup and not confirmed for production.
