NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 Is Coming Back In 2024

NASCAR will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval for 2024 in time to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Brickyard 400.

The Cup Series raced on the 2.5-mile track from 1994 until 2020, before giving the infield Indy Road Course a shot for the past three years under the Brickyard 200 banner.

The move was due to dwindling crowds and less than ideal racing provided by the sixth generation Cup Series car on the oval track, but many drivers and fans have been wanting to see how the new seventh generation (Next Gen) cars would do.

A private Goodyear tire test session held in August with cars driven by Chase Briscoe, Alex Bowman and Ty Gibbs apparently gave the series the confidence to make the switch.

The last Brickyard 400 was held on July 5 2020, when Kevin Harvick claimed his second straight win in front of stands left empty due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was Harvick’s third win at the track, where Jimmie Johnson won four races and Jeff Gordon five, including the inaugural race in 1994, which was held in front of a sold out crowd of more than 250,000 fans.

The 2024 race will take place on Sunday, July 21 and be supported by an Xfinity Series race the day before.

Next year’s full NASCAR Cup Series schedule is expected to be released next week.
