Andretti Global has been given the green light, now it just needs to make it to the finish line.

The FIA motorsports governing body has approved a bid from Andretti Global and GM’s Cadillac brand to apply for a two-car Formula One team.

Seven teams noted their interest in joining the racing series, but the all-American effort was the only one of four which completed the application that will move on to the next stage in the process.

“Selection criteria also included sustainability management in line with the FIA’s ambition of achieving the sport’s goals for net-zero by 2030,” the FIA said.

“Any prospective F1 team was also required to illustrate how they intend to achieve a positive societal impact through its participation in the sport.”

Several F1 teams have spoken against expanding the 20-car field, and any new entrant is expected to pay at least $200 million fee to help offset lost rights revenues to the current teams.

“We note the FIA’s conclusions in relation to the first and second phases of their process and will now conduct our own assessment of the merits of the remaining application,” F1 said in a statement released to the Associated Press.

MORE RACING NEWS FROM AMERICAN CARS AND RACING

Andretti plans to base the team at its Fishers, Indiana, headquarters, rather than in Europe, and intends to field at least one American driver in its Cadillac-powered cars. Andretti Global operates teams in several open wheel series, including IndyCar and Formula E, while Cadillac builds prototype racing cars for the IMSA and WEC sports car series.

“The formation of this distinctly American team is an important moment of pride for all our employees and fans. We feel strongly that Andretti Cadillac’s deep racing competencies and the technological advancements that come from racing will benefit our customers while heightening enthusiasm for F1, globally,” a statement released by Andretti said.

If F1 approves the entry, it will likely join the series in concert with the launch of next-generation cars in 2026, when Ford will also be on the grid as the engine supplier for Red Bull Racing.
