Toyota’s California-based CALTY Design Research center has come up with an idea for an off-roader that’s ready to go off-planet.
The Toyota Baby Lunar Cruiser Concept is a futuristic all-electric SUV inspired by the original FJ40 Land Cruiser.
The compact vehicle is controlled by joysticks and rides on wheels with built-in electric motors and treads supported by a flexible matrix instead of an air chamber, which would eliminate the threat of flats on harsh terrain … or in a vacuum.

A canopy-style windshield provides extra visibility while an augmented reality dashboard uses lidar and other sensors to display information over a live view of what’s in front of the vehicle.
CALTY envisions it for use on both Earth and extraterrestrial bodies, Toyota doesn’t currently have plans to put it into production.

It is, however, working with Japan’s space agency to develop a lunar rover for a potential manned Moon landing in 2029.
