NASCAR Newbie Shane Van Gisbergen Wins His Third Bathurst 1000 in Red Bull Chevrolet Camaro
NASCAR’s newest import is bidding farewell to his old series on a high note.
Chicago Street Race winner Shane van Gisbergen, who will be driving for Trackhouse Racing in the U.S. in 2024, won the Bathurst 1000 in Australia on Sunday in his Red Bull Ampol Racing Chevrolet Camaro along with teammate and fellow New Zealander Richie Stanaway.
It was van Gisbergen’s second consecutive win and third in the past four years at the 1,000-kilometer race, which is the Supercar Championship’s premiere event.
Van Gisbergen crossed the line nearly 20 seconds ahead of second-place Brodie Kostecki, who drove with David Russell, for the largest margin of victory in the race since 1999.
Van Gisbergen celebrated the win with a very NASCAR-like burnout that shredded one of his tires.
Three-time and defending Supercars champion van Gisbergen sits second to Kostecki in the 2023 season standings with two races to go.
“Thanks Red Bull Ampol Racing. It’s been tough, thanks to all these fans. I’m really going to miss it, I love this place. I’ll be back,” van Gisbergen said after the race, according to Supercars.com.
2024 NASCAR CUP SERIES SCHEDULE RELEASED WITH BIG CHANGES
Van Gisbergen made a guest appearance for Trackhouse Racing at the Chicago Street Race and claimed a commanding win in his first-ever try at the NASCAR Cup Series. He followed that up with a 10th-place finish at the Brickyard 200 and has signed a development deal with Trackhouse Racing that will see him competing across all of NASCAR’s national series in 2024.
His Trackhouse Racing program will also include entries in various late model short track racing events.
