Next-Generation Ram 1500 TRX Spotted, But What’s Under The Hood?
The Ram 1500 TRX is down, but not out.
Ram’s full-size 702 hp supertruck is being discontinued at the end of this year as the Stellantis brands start phasing out the legendary supercharged 6.2-liter ‘Hellcat’ V8.
The Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat will be the only model to offer it in 2024, as the Dodge Charger and Challenger make way for an electric muscle car.
But when Ram announced the TRX’s demise, it came with an asterisk.
THE CHEAPEST V8-POWERED AMERICAN CARS AND TRUCKS
Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis said, “this current chapter in Ram’s high-performance trucks is coming to a close, but it’s not the end of TRX’s story. While we’ll have more news to come at a later date.”
Now, Road & Track has posted images of what appears to be a next-generation TRX being tested on public roads.
The truck is wearing some camouflage, but is clearly based on the Ram 1500’s widebody TRX platform. Right now, there’s only speculation as to what is powering it, but it’s definitely not electric.
It’s more likely a version of the ‘Hurricane’ 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder that’s currently offered in the Jeep Wagoneer lineup with up to 510 hp, but is capable of much more. Mopar will soon start selling a ‘Hurricrate’ crate motor version of the engine that offers up to 1,000 hp.
RETURN OF THE DODGE RAM? HERE’S WHAT THE CEO OF BOTH BRANDS HAS TO SAY
A production TRX with a Hurricane could end up falling somewhere between those two outputs, but it’s possible the new model will be a lot tamer than the last. Its top competitor, the Ford F-150 Raptor, comes in a standard 450 hp model and a 700 hp Raptor R version. At least it does now. Ford has announced that the 2024 F-150 Raptor R will be getting a power boost, but hasn’t yet said how much it is.
It will almost certainly be at least the three horsepower required to claim the “Most Powerful V8 Pickup Ever” title from the TRX, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out the exact amount, and whether or not the new TRX takes it back.
MORE PICKUP NEWS FROM AMERICAN CARS AND RACING
The latter news could come pretty soon, too, as Kuniskis said an updated Ram 1500 lineup will be revealed early next year.
