Hydrogen-Powered Ram HD Pickup On The Way

Ram will soon have a pickup powered by a different type of gas.

The truck brand has reconfirmed plans to introduce an electrified heavy duty model that runs on hydrogen.

It won’t burn it, but will use the gas in a fuel cell that generates electricity with a catalyst that combines it with atmospheric oxygen to create water vapor.

Ram’s sister brands in the Stellantis family, Peugeot and Citroen, already offer the technology in vans sold in Europe.

The main advantages of using a fuel cell rather than a battery charged off the grid is that the vehicle can be lighter and the refueling process much quicker.

Refilling the pressurized hydrogen tanks can be completed in five minutes, as quickly as filling up a tank with gasoline. This is particularly advantageous when towing long distances, which is a typical use case for heavy duty pickups.

Details on the pickup have not been revealed, but Stellantis is launching a large fuel cell-powered van in 2024 with a driving range of 311 miles between fill-ups.

Before the fuel cell pickup arrives, Ram will be launching the battery-powered 1500 REV pickup that will be available with a 229 kWh battery pack good for up to 500 miles of range when unladen and a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds.

A Ram 1500 REV XR with a range-extending gasoline generator will be added to the lineup in the future in an effort to bridge the gap between zero emissions and the ability to travel long distances without stopping for lengthy charging sessions.
