The Toyota FJ Bruiser is built like a tank. Well, part of a tank

The custom extreme 4×4 unveiled at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas is inspired by the Ultra4 trucks that race at the King of the Hammers race series.

The project was created by the Toyota Motorsports garage at the automaker’s U.S. headquarters in Plano, Tex., with help from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Costa Mesa, Calif., to help celebrate the return of the Land Cruiser name on an all-new model in 2024.

The FJ Bruiser is based on the 1966 Land Cruiser FJ45 Pickup, but just barely. Its throwback body capping an entirely unique build.

Under the hood, and sticking out of it, is the 358 cubic-inch V8 from one of Toyota’s NASCAR Cup Series cars, that TRD tuned to crank out 735 hp.

It delivers it to the 42-inch tires through a three-speed Rancho Drivetrain Engineering transmission and an Advanced Adapter Atlas transfer case with four speeds each for the two-wheel-drive speeds and four four-wheel-drive settings.

Toyota says its gearing ranges from 12 mph to 165 mph when the engine is running at 7,000 rpm, for grunt or speed.

The truck features a full roll cage and custom frame, plus solid axles at both ends that provide enough articulation to put the top of the wheels halfway up the windows at full stretch.

The most unique feature, however, is a modified CAMSO tank track originally designed for an ATV that’s been installed down the center of truck’s underbody and makes it virtually impossible to get stuck on a rock.

TOYOTA ‘DAWN’ TEASED, BUT WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON?

“This build is iconic, one-of-a-kind, and, let’s face it, totally radical looking,” said Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing. “It’s a reminder of what Land Cruiser has always been; a vehicle built to take you as far as your imagination will allow.”

Unfortunately, the new Land Cruiser doesn’t have the track, or the NASCAR engine, or any of the FJ Bruiser’s features. At least not yet.
