The Chevrolet K5 Blazer Returns … Sort Of

How many Chevy Blazers can one country handle?

First Chevy brought back the Blazer name on a midsize crossover SUV, then it decided to add an electric Blazer EV to the mix.

But wasn’t the Blazer SUV originally a full-size, two-door truck? Yes, but Chevy isn’t planning on making one of those.

Enter Flat Out Autos.

The Jonesboro, Ark., custom truck shop has made a business of turning modern GM trucks into two-door SUVs.

A few years ago, it converted a Chevy Tahoe into a two-door SUV with throwback styling inspired by the original 1969 K5 Blazer, then followed it up with a GMC Sierra 1500 pickup reimagined as a modern Jimmy.

Now it’s transformed a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 into a K5 Blazer-like, two-door SUV called the KR2 that it unveiled at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Flat Out Autos started with a base Silverado 1500 WT regular cab powered by a 5.3-liter V8, trimmed 22 inches from the wheelbase and blew out the back wall of the cabin, similar to what it did with the Jimmy build.

It then strengthened the chassis, added a roll bar, a pair of seats in the bed, had Sankuer Composite Technologies construct a removable carbon fiber roof for the rear of the truck and kept the Silverado’s front end styling.

The suspension is upgraded with a long travel setup from Dirt King that features Fox Racing shocks and the truck rides on a set of 37-inch Nitto Grappler tires.

Flat Out Autos will recreate the build for $178,000 including the donor truck, but can customize it further with options like a Whipple supercharger and a swing out rear tire carrier that’s compatible with the tailgate.
