The Americans are coming!

If Formula One lets them.

Cadillac has officially registered to become a Formula One power unit manufacturer starting in 2028.

It plans to provide the units to a team run by Andretti Global, which is looking to field and all-American effort in the series.

However, it might not be allowed to.

The FIA governing body has given a nod of approval to the Andretti Cadillac proposal, but now its up to the Formula One teams to decided if they will let it enter the series as an 11th team.

Andretti and Cadillac are moving forward with preparations as they await a decision, with Andretti already having completed wind tunnel testing with a 2023-spec car design to collect data and General Motors initiating work on a prototype power unit.

“We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a press release.

“With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

No other teams have yet said if they are interested in purchasing power units from Cadillac.

Asked by American Cars And Racing if Cadillac will move forward with the power unit program even if the Andretti team’s bid is denied, a spokesperson responded, “as we’ve said previously, GM is committed to partnering with Andretti to race in F1.”

However, the spokesrperson confirmed that the team will launch as Andretti Cadillac without the GM power units as soon as possible.

Formula One will be instituting all new car regulations in 2026 and Ford will be entering the series then in partnership with Red Bull Racing.
