Kodiak Robotics has built a fully autonomous Ford F-150 that could be heading to the front lines one day.

The prototype truck was created for the Army Robotic Combat Vehicles program.

The pickup, which wasn’t built in collaboration with Ford, is equipped with a hardened version of Kodiak’s SensorPods.

The compact units are equipped with all of the hardware needed to enable fully autonomous driving, including cameras and lidar sensors.

The SensorPods were originally developed for street vehicles, including semi tractors, and integrate with vehicle controls that allow them to drive themselves.

Kodiak said that the F-150 is already being tested at an undisclosed military base location and will be evaluated for its ability to “navigate complex terrain, diverse operational conditions, and GPS-challenged environments.”

The system also allows for remote control of the vehicle when required, and the SensorPods design allows them to be replaced in less than 10 minutes.

The F-150 is just a testbed to showcase the technology, which Kodiak said can be installed on virtually any type of vehicle, including tracked tanks.
