Chevrolet hasn’t confirmed an immediate replacement for the model, but said in March when its coming discontinuation was originally announced that “this is not the end of Camaro’s story.”

This will be the second time the Camaro has been put on hiatus since it was first launched as a 1967 model, the last break coming between 2002 and 2010.

According to Camaro lore, its name comes from a French slang word that means comrade or friend.

The Camaro’s 2010 return with retromodern styling was a huge success that rocketed it to the top of the American sports car sales charts for several years, but the redesigned sixth-generation car that followed it in 2016 couldn’t climb to the same heights.

Through the first three quarters of this year, Camaro sales have trailed not just its Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang rivals, but also the Chevrolet Corvette.

Nevertheless, it was a huge year for the car as a modified version of the Camaro ZL1 NASCAR Cup Series car raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans as an exhibition to the delight of fans around the world.

GM is idling 369 jobs at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant where the Camaro was built, which will be retooled for a future, undisclosed model.

All of the workers will be offered other opportunities at GM facilities in Michigan, according to GM.

The Camaro will live on in one arena for at least another year as it will continue to be the car Chevy fields in the NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series until a successor is announced no earlier than 2025.

UPDATE: Motor1 reports that the last Camaro built was a ZL1 1LE trim with a manual transmission. Chevy has still not released an images or confirmed where its heading.
