Stealthy Hybrid Humvee Revealed

The Humvee is going hybrid.

Famed diesel engine tuner Banks Power has developed a hybrid version of the military Humvee in an effort to modernize the decades-old military machine.

Company founder Gale Banks said it has been working on the project since 2021.

Banks Power posted a teaser video on YouTube revealing the vehicle and said it will follow up with a deeper dive into the technology soon.

The vehicle’s V8 turbodiesel has been replaced by a V6 turbodiesel attached to a motor generator unit that adds power and charges an 800-volt battery mounted in the trunk.

Banks says it is quicker and faster than the standard truck, has a longer range and can run silently in all-electric mode.

It is also able to provide enough stationary power for a mobile tactical operations center, similar to how the Ford F-150’s Pro Power Onboard system can be used.

The U.S. Army has been working on hybrid solutions for a variety of vehicles through its Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, although it hasn’t said if the Banks system will go into production.

This isn’t the first time Banks Power has upgraded the Humvee. Back in 2012, it modified the 4×4’s 6.5-liter V8 to nearly double its power and torque to better deal with the added weight of armor that was being added while also improving its high altitude performance.

Banks Power was also part of the team that developed the Oshkosh JLTV that is succeeding the Humvee in a number of applications.
