The Sixth Generation Chevrolet Camaro Could Have Been A Pickup
The last Chevrolet Camaro was built on December 14 and it was very much like the first.
Photos of the car have not been released, but it was a two-door coupe in the high-performance ZL1 1LE trim.
The original Camaro launched in 1967 as a coupe and convertible and only those styles, plus a liftback, have been built over the years.
But Chevy has thought about doing something very different.
WHAT WILL REPLACE THE CHEVROLET CAMARO IN NASCAR?
The General Motors Design Instagram account has posted an image of a two-door Camaro-based pickup.
Designed in the style of the “ute” car-based pickups that are popular in Australia, it features a bed as long as the cabin and a roof that extends over the rear window.
“Within the Design studios, we dream big and explore every idea, even imagining fun new takes on beloved classics. Here’s a sketch that was too cool to keep to ourselves.,” the caption said.
There’s no indication that Chevrolet seriously thought about making it, but it might not have been too much of a stretch if it did.
The last ute was built in Australia in 2017, when GM discontinued the Holden brand there.
It was based on the same platform as the Commodore sedan, which was sold in the United States as the Chevrolet SS. But that’s not the only car it was related to.
The Zeta platform was also used for the fifth generation Chevrolet Camaro, which would have made a ute version relatively simple to do.
The sixth generation Camaro is designed on the Alpha platform. It hasn’t spawned a ute, but the Cadillac CT5 and CT4 sedans are built on it, so it probably could’ve accommodated the ute from the sketch if they really wanted to make it real.
Now the big question is, will Chevrolet ever make a real Camaro again? No announcement has been made about a successor, which means it will be years, if ever, before one is on sale again.
