Cummins will spend just over $2 billion to pay penalties and update approximately 630,000 Ram heavy duty pickups equipped with diesel engines that didn’t meet emissions regulations.

The Department of Justice alleged that the engines were equipped with “defeat devices” that allowed them to pass emissions tests, but operate outside of regulations in regular use.

Cummins did not admit any liability as part of the settlement.

The action covers 2013 to 2019 Ram 2500/3500 trucks that will be updated with new software to address the issue.

A portion of the fines will go toward mitigating the estimated additional pollution created by the vehicles.

Another 300,000 2019 to 2023 Ram 2500/3500s with Cummins engines were also found to have unreported software, but it did not disable any emissions controls and won’t require a recall, according to the Associated Press.
