Toyota Launching Solid State Battery With 750-Mile Range, 10-Minute Charging By 2028
Toyota has been trailing some other brands on the road to electrification, but it’s about to charge ahead.
Toyota has largely focused on affordable hybrid models, but has started to ramp up its fully electric vehicle development.
The head of Toyota’s business in India, Vikram Gulati, has now told an investment conference in the country on Thursday that the automaker plans to have next generation solid state batteries in production by 2027 or 2028.
“We will be rolling out our electric vehicles with solid state batteries in a couple of years from now.”

“It will be a vehicle which will be charging in 10 minutes, giving a range of 1,200 kms (750 miles) and life expectancy will be very good,” Gulati said, according to Reuters.
Gulati didn’t offer details on the technology, or the type of vehicle he was talking about. The 750-mile estimate was likely not the EPA rating, which is more conservative than those used in other countries by more than 20%.
The longest-range electric vehicle on sale today is the $125,000 Lucid Air Grand Touring, which is rated for 469 miles per charge and needs about 30 minutes to replenish its battery to 80%.
Toyota is in the process of building its fits battery factory in the U.S. in North Carolina, where it it scheduled to start manufacturing current-generation batteries next year.
Gulati didn’t indicate where the solid state batteries would be made, but the packs would have to be produced in North America with materials sourced from U.S. free trading partners in order to qualify for the federal tax credit on electric vehicle purchases The vehicles that use them also need to be built in North America to qualify.
