The Ford F-150 Lightning SwitchGear Is A Transforming Off-Road Electric Truck

The Ford F-150 Lightning is about to hit the sky.

The F-150 Lightning SwitchGear is a demonstration version of the electric pickup that’s been designed for high speed off-road driving and jumping.

The project is a collaboration between Ford Performance and Vaughn Gittin Jr’s RTR Vehicles, which runs Ford Broncos in the Ultra4 extreme off-road racing series.

The Lightning retains its stock 580 hp electric all-wheel-drive powertrain, but gets carbon fiber bodywork and a wide-track, long-travel suspension.

It features double wishbones up front and a multilink setup in the rear, both ends equipped with Fox 3.0 remote reservoir shocks, similar to the F-150 Raptor’s.

The ride height is 13.5 inches in front and 11 inches in the wheel, while wheel travel is 11 inches and 13 inches, respectively.

Droop straps help keep things under control as the 37-inch NITTO Ridge Grappler tires on 18-inch wheels go to work.

The cabin has been equipped with five Sparco off-road racing seats with six-point harnesses, so you can feel free to bring the family along for a wild ride. And not just on the dirt.

As its name suggests, the SwitchGear is a transformer,. The suspension can be lowered to seven inches in front and five in the rear, the high clearance bumper replaced by an aerodynamic valance, the steel rock rails swapped for rocker skirts and the tires changed for a set of Nitto street rubber to turn it into a pavement-pounding performance truck.

The SwitchGear isn’t destined for production as-is, but Ford Performance Motorsports global director Mark Rushbrook said “it provides a testbed for pushing the boundaries of what’s expected from electric trucks.”
