The Ford Mustang GTD Can Hit 210 MPH With DRS And Is Already Sold Out
The Ford Mustang GTD is essentially a race car for the road. In fact, it may be better than that.
The $300,000 supercar being launched later this year is based on the Mustang GT3 that Ford will be racing in IMSA, WEC and other series around the world.
It’s built by Multimatic, the same outfit responsible for the competition car.
Multimatic starts with the production Mustang chassis, but adds a redesigned suspension that uses the company’s signature DSSV dampers, a wide carbon fiber body shaped like the competition car’s and a couple of tricks the racing drivers have to do without.
THE USA NEEDS MORE AMERICAN SUPERCARS
Instead of the Mustang GT3’s regulation-restricted 550 hp 5.4-liter V8, the GTD gets an 800 hp supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that sends power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed transaxle.
If that doesn’t sound fast enough, there’s a button that makes it faster.

The car is equipped with a Drag Reduction System, or DRS, similar to what Formula 1 cars use. When activated, the giant rear wing adjusts its angle to allow more air to flow through it while flaps at the front of the car open up to balance out the reduced downforce.
The GTD remains in development ahead of its release, but during a tour of Multimatic’s GT3 race car shop in Mooresville, N.C., Larry Holt, the company’s vice president of special vehicle operations, revealed how extreme the effect of the DRS is.
Holt said the car’s top speed will be around 185 mph with the wing closed and 210 mph with DRS activated, which will make it the fastest Ford Mustang ever. It’s also a fast-seller.
Ford hasn’t said exactly how many GTDs it plans to build, but Ford CEO Jim Farley told American Cars And Racing that they’re “pretty much” already sold out.
