Tesla took the top spot on the California auto sales charts last year. Both of them.
According to California New Car Dealers Association’s annual report, the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the best-selling light truck and car in the state in 2023, and number one and two overall.
Tesla delivered 82,786 Model 3 sedans, which was far ahead of the number two Toyota Camry’s 51,330 total and also topped the near luxury cars segment.
The Model Y racked up 132,636 sales, more than doubling the second place Toyota Rav4’s 58,496 result.

The Model Y was also the best-selling car in the world last year. Its 1.23 million sales beat the 2022 winning Rav4’s 1.07 million, according to Jato Dynamics.
It was the other way around in the U.S., with 434,943 Rav4 sales and an estimated 385,900 Model Y sales. (Tesla doesn’t break out U.S. or model-specific sales in its public reports.) Both vehicles finishing behind the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram pickups.
