See It: Sonoma Raceway Getting Repaved Ahead Of 2024 NASCAR Weekend
Fine Sonoma wines may improve with age, but Sonoma Raceway passed its expiration date last year.
The Northern California road course is being resurfaced for the first time in nearly a quarter-century by Bay Cities Paving & Grading.
The work is scheduled to be done this spring well in advance of NASCAR’s visit on the weekend of June 7-9. The track recently posted an image and a update on the project.
The first layer of fresh asphalt has been laid down, but there are two more to go.

The track has been hosting Cup Series races since 1999 on a variety of layouts and currently uses the 1.999-mile “Chute” configuration, which skips the turn 5 and 6 “Carousel” but retains the numbering for the rest.
“The repave will allow for the drivers to go all-out, all the time,†two-time Sonoma winner Kyle Busch said in a release. Austin Dillon added that “I think Turn 11 will see a lot of smoke! Gonna be an exciting race.â€
California native Jeff Gordon holds the record with five wins at Sonoma while 2023 winner Martin Truex Jr. has the most of any active driver with four.
The track was also where Daniel Suarez became the first Mexican-born drive to win a NASCAR Cup Series race in 2022.

Sonoma isn’t the only NASCAR track getting a long-overdue makeover.
North Wilkesboro Speedway, which is scheduled to host the All-Star Race for the second year in a row, was repaved last fall for the first time since 1981.
