Ford And GM Versus Tesla: Who Wins The Super Bowl Of Automobile Manufacturing?
The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will be carrying the hopes and dreams of their fans on their shoulders in Las Vegas this weekend as they battle it out on the field, but which city is the best … at making automobiles?
Tesla’s Fremont Factory is actually a lot closer to the 49ers Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara than the city of San Francisco is, while the cross-state Kansas City metro area is home to Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Missouri and GM’s Fairfax Assembly in Kansas.
Tesla builds the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y in Fremont and the facility cranked out 560,000 total last year, more than any other factory in North America, according to the company.
It also manufactures the Model Y at its Austin, Tex., factory alongside the Cybertruck.
Kansas City Assembly is one of the factories that builds the mighty F-150 as well as the Transit and E-Transit vans and the plant produced a combined 462,000 vehicles in 2023.
General Motors doesn’t release total production for Fairfax Assembly, but last year it sold 153,000 of the Chevrolet Malibus and Cadillac XT4s built there in the U.S., which is where most of them stay, despite having to take a time out during the UAW strike due to supply issues.

Add GM and Ford’s tallies and teamwork makes the dream work with 612,000 vehicles to hold off Tesla for the title.

That’s not how the Super Bowl is currently predicted to go, however, with ESPN currently giving the 49ers a 60% chance of winning.
