Autonomous Waymo Car Destroyed And Burned By Mob In San Francisco

A group of people in San Francisco’s Chinatown inexplicably destroyed a Waymo autonomous car that was passing through during Lunar New Year celebrations on Saturday night.

The company recently began testing its driverless ride-hailing service in the city.

Video from the scene shows the electric car being surrounded, before people start kicking and smashing its body and windows as onlookers captured the moment on their smartphone cameras.

Fireworks were then lit underneath and inside of the vehicle, causing it to erupt into flames, according to the San Francisco Fire Department.

The fire was eventually extinguished and the Jaguar i-Pace based vehicle left without a roof.

No injuries were reported and an investigation is ongoing. Authorities have not yet determined what spurred the attack.

“We are working closely with local safety officials to respond to the situation,” Waymo told The San Francisco Standard.

The incident comes just days after a Waymo vehicle was involved in a collision with a cyclist in the city.

Last year, the General Motors-owned Cruise ceased driverless operations in San Francisco after one of its vehicles struck and dragged a pedestrian, causing serious injuries.
