It was a storybook finish that was a nightmare for a lot of drivers.
Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron won the Daytona 500 on the 40th anniversary of the team’s first NASCAR race entry.
Byron crossed the finish line for the final lap just ahead of teammate Alex Bowman a moment before the yellow flag flew due to an accident that started as Austin Cindric was turned into Ross Chastain as Chastain pulled out to make a move on Byron.
The race was relatively clean and saw just two yellow flag periods caused by accidents. The first came on the sixth lap and the last with eight to go when a “big one” collected 18 cars.

Byron and Bowman were involved in that wreck, but their cars weren’t damaged and Byron was up front for the restart with four laps to go and led to the end.
“Daytona 500, it’s frickin’ awesome. Let’s go,” Byron said on Fox after the race.
