The Hennessey Venom F5 Is Ready For 300 MPH Record Run On A Texas Highway
Hennessey Special Vehicles has announced plans to attempt to set a production car speed record this year.
Owner John Hennessey said in a YouTube video that the Texas-based car builder has one of its 1,817 hp Venom F5 hypercars ready to go.
Hennessey has delivered 22 of the 24 $3 million street Venom F5 coupes it has sold so far to customers and won’t build any more than that, but also offers a roadster and track variants that are still available to order.
Hennessey said the goal is to break the Bugatti Chiron’s 304.77 mph one-way mark that was achieved in 2019, but in both directions to make it an official record accounting for wind and road variances.

Exactly what road it will take place on is yet to be determined. Hennessey said he doesn’t have access to an appropriate test track and that it will likely take place on a highway, possibly in Texas.

Hennessey’s cars have performed several speed runs on closed Texas highways in the past and he said he has a good relationship with authorities, but will need four to six miles of straight and smooth pavement to make the safest attempt.
Veteran professional sports car racing driver David Donohue is the company’s test driver and lined up to go for the record.
The car has already hit 271 mph in testing at the 3.2-mile Johnny Bohmer Proving Ground on a former Space Shuttle landing strip in Florida.
“Our hypercar has a simulated theoretical top speed of 328mph, but we’re certainly not chasing that number,” Hennessey said.
“Breaking 300mph in two directions is this year’s goal, while hitting 500km/h (310.8mph) in one direction would be the ultimate way of celebrating the internal combustion engine!”
