The Apple Car Program Is Dead
Apple has canceled its long-gestating car program before putting a vehicle on the road.
The company sent an email to members of 2000-person Project Titan team on Tuesday announcing the move, Bloomberg reported.
Some of the employees will be moved to work on generative AI and some layoffs are expected.
Apple never publicly released details on the project, which was shrouded in secrecy, but it was understood to be aimed at developing an autonomous electric vehicle.
CEO Tim Cook in 2017 told Bloomberg that autonomous systems were the “mother of all A.I. projects … probably one of the most difficult A.I. projects.”
Apple had been testing autonomous driving technology on California roads, as revealed in required government reports.
Apple’s move comes as tech rival Sony is working toward the launch of an electric car project in conjunction with Honda that has been branded Afeela and will feature a host of Sony technologies.
