Which States Buy The Most Used American Cars?

When it comes to car shopping, not all states are created equal.

Some brands fare much better in certain regions than others, and it’s the same with domestics vs. imports overall.

Foreign makes tend to do better on the east and west coasts, while the U.S. automakers remain popular in the heartland.

But on the sate level, even neighbors can see significant differences in the makeup of their automotive sales markets.

A recent report from iSeeCars.com analyzed seven million sales of 1-5 year old used cars that took place in 2023 and calculated the percentage of domestic brands sold in each state.

The place of manufacture for the models was not taken into consideration, and the big three domestic automakers all sell vehicles that are built outside of the U.S.

The national average was 42.7%, which is close to the average for the total new car market share of GM, Ford, Stellantis, Tesla, Rivian and Lucid.

Michigan was way on top with a result of 73.5% and followed by the pickup-loving states of North Dakota at 70%, Wyoming at 68.1% and South Dakota at 67.8 percent.

On the other end of the list were California, where Toyota and Honda only recently overtaken by Tesla as the top new-car brand and just 28.3% of used car sales were domestic. Connecticut at 28.5%, New Jersey at 29.8% and Hawaii at 30.9% were not far behind.
