You never know what you’ll discover during a renovation.

Workers at NASCAR’s North Wilkesboro Speedway have uncovered evidence of a rumored moonshine cave hidden under the frontstretch grandstands.

Inspectors were looking at cracks in the concrete foundation that were apparently the result of a sinkhole and when they dug into them they found a 700-square-foot open area underneath.

“When we began renovating and restoring North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2022, we’d often hear stories of how an old moonshine still was operated here on the property under the grandstands,” Steve Smith, senior vice president of operations and development at Speedway Motorsports, said in a track release.

“Well, we haven’t found find a still (yet), but we’ve found a small cave and an interior wall that would have been the perfect location to not only make illegal liquor, but to hide from the law as well. We don’t know how people would have gotten in and out, but as we uncover more, there’s no telling what we might find.”

Renovations at the long-shuttered track began in 2022 and it hosted the NASCAR All-Star Race last year, which was the first time the Cup Series visited the track since 1996.

After using the old pavement for a throwback feel, the track was repaved last November for the first time since 1981.

Approximately 600 seats have been removed from the grandstand as the track works to figure out the best way to repair it before this year’s All-Star Race in May.

“Now we have a race before the race,” Swift said.
