Mexican NASCAR Star Daniel Suarez Passes U.S. Citizenship Test
He may need to get his helmet repainted.
Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suarez announced on Monday that he has taken a big step toward becoming a U.S. citizen.
“Hey, amigos, how you guys doing? I hope everyone is doing great,” he started in a video posted to social media.
“As you guys know, today I had my citizenship exam and I passed,” he beamed.
“It was interesting, actually, having an exam. I’ve been out of school a long time.”
After getting his start driving stock cars in Mexico, Suarez moved to the U.S. to try to climb to the top of the NASCAR ladder. Last year, he became the first Mexican-born driver to win a Cup Series race at Sonoma in 2022 and followed it up with a win at Atlanta this February.
“This country has given me so much,” he said, thanking his fans for their encouragement ahead of the test.
“I am from Mexico and I will be always very, very proud of my country, but the United States for the last 12 years has given me so much and I feel like it was the right time.”
Suarez returned to his roots this February when he entered the NASCAR Mexico Series exhibition race held during The Clash at the L.A. Coliseum weekend and won the 150-lap event from a sixth place starting position.
Suarez drove a car painted in the colors of the Mexican flag, which are typically featured on his NASCAR Cup Series helmet.
Suarez also won the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship.
