Ford Is Working On A Four-Door Mustang

Will it blow the doors off of the competition?

Ford is looking to expand the Mustang lineup and it could include the first four-door pony car.

The news comes directly from the horse’s mouth

“We will never build a Mustang that isn’t a Mustang,” Farley told Autocar, while discussing possible future models. “For instance, there will never be room for a small, two-row Ford SUV with a Mustang badge stuck on it. But could we do other Mustang body forms – a four-door or whatever? I believe we could, as long as these models have all the performance and attitude of the original.”

Ford has never sold a four-door Mustang sedan, although it considered it when the vehicle was first launched in the 1960s. A styling model was created and considered for production.

A four-door Mustang wouldn’t exactly be out of place in the American performance car world, as the last generation Dodge Challenger was essentially a two-door version of the Charger sedan. The two models are being combined into one body offered under the Charger name this year that will come in two-door and four-door variants with electric and internal combustion engine drivetrains.

Ford has, of course, applied the Mustang name to an SUV, which also happens to be electric. Despite early resistance to the name from some diehard fans, the Mustang Mach-E has proven to be a moderate global success.

Farley, who recently committed the Mustang to a foreseeable future powered by V8 engines, added that “we will never make an electric Mustang.”

“I look at other users of pure-electric power such as Formula E, and even companies like Rimac, and I just don’t think that would be right for Mustang. Great for other Fords – look at the worldwide success of Transit – but not for Mustang.”
