The Jeep Cherokee was discontinued in February of 2023 with no replacement for the compact SUV announced, but one may be on the way.

Mopar Insiders reports that Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa told Italian news oulet Il Sole 24 Ore that a new Cherokee will be back in production next year.

The model will be built at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico where the smaller Jeep Compass is manufactured.

The vehicle is expected to be designed around a multi-energy platform and offered in fully electric and hybrid variants.

Jeep is scheduled to reveal the larger electric Wagoneer S on Thursday, May 30, which is closer in size to the Grand Cherokee.

As for the name of the new model, Jeep has come under fire from some Native Americans in recent years for its use of the Cherokee name, but it launched the latest Grand Cherokee in 2021 without any changes.

The Cherokee was previously built at Stellantis’ Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, which was slated for closure until last year’s UAW contract negotiations.

Instead, the factory will be reopened soon to manufacture a new midsize pickup for Ram, according to the UAW. That model has not been officially announced or revealed.
