NHRA drag racing legend John Force has been released from a neuro intensive care unit as he slowly begins to recover from injuries suffered during a 302 mph crash at the Virginia Nationals two weekends ago.
Force was competing in the first knockout round when his Funny Car’s engine blew and sent it out of control into both walls.
The 75-year-old Force has a traumatic brain injury, fractured sternum and injured right wrist.
A statement released by the team on Friday said that Force is still has cognitive and behavioral symptoms, which include periods of confusion.
Force is able to walk with assistance, but the team expects he will require a lengthy recovery that will include time in a long-term care facility that specializes in traumatic brain injuries.
Force has 16 career championships and 157 wins, including two this season.
Despite not completing the past two events, he is currently second in the NHRA Funny Car points standings
