Current Ferrari Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz is moving to Williams Racing in 2025 on a multi-year contract, the team confirmed on Monday.

Sainz has been with Ferrari since 2021 and is being replaced by Lewis Hamilton next season.

The Spaniard will be teaming up with Alex Albon and taking the seat that will be vacated by Logan Sargeant, the only American on the F1 grid.

Sargent is in his second season with the team and is listed in 20th position out of 20 full-time drivers with no points this year. He scored one point in 2023 at the Circuit of the Americas, but finished the season in 21st behind Liam Lawson, who scored two points while filling in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at Alpha Tauri.

The 23-year-old Sargeant has not yet commented on Sainz’s move, but the team praised his contributions to the team.

“Williams Racing would also like to thank Logan Sargeant for his hard work and dedication over the past two years,” the team said in the press release announcing Sainz’s signing.

“As a graduate of the Williams Driver Academy, Logan became the first US driver to score a point for 30 years when he finished 10th in Austin last year, and has played a fundamental role in developing the team. Williams will give Logan every support as he looks to continue his racing career for 2025 and beyond.”

In early July, Motorsport reported that Prema Racing had reached out to Sargeant to discuss the possibility of him joining the IndyCar team it is launching in 2025.

Sargeant previously drove for Prema’s Formula 3 team in 2020, when he finished 3rd in the season standings. In 2023 he became the first American to race in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi in 2015.
