American-Made Acura Performance EV Revealed With Dramatic SUV Coupe Style
Will the real ZDX reboot please stand up.
Acura has revealed a new Performance EV Concept that previews an upcoming electric model that will be manufactured in Ohio starting late next year.
The four-door SUV will be the first model built on the new Honda/Acura EV platform, which is entirely different from the General Motors Ultium platform that the current Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue use.
The Performance EV Concept’s raked hatchback brings to mind the radical 2010 ZDX more than the new, more conventionally shaped 2024 ZDX SUV does.
However tts long hood and massive 23-inch enhance the drama of its styling beyond that of its internal combustion engine-powered predecessor.
US-BUILT CAR OF THE YEARTM: ACURA INTEGRA TYPE S
“The Acura Performance EV Concept is the archetype of Acura Performance in the electrified era, taking full advantage of the extreme design freedom of stance and proportion offered by our next-generation EV platform to push the boundaries of Acura design even further,” Dave Marek, Acura Design Executive said in a media release on the concept.
“As with our previous Acura concept vehicles, the Acura Performance EV Concept introduces a number of design themes that will be seen on future Acura vehicles.”
Acura and Honda have a good track record of maintaining the look of their concept vehicles to the production version. The new ZDX, for example, was only mildly toned down from the Precision EV Concept on which it was based.
Technical details have not been released, but Honda has previously revealed that the platform will feature a high-density battery pack that an be charged from 15% to 80% in 10-15 minutes and is engineered to maintain at least 90% of its capacity after 10 years.
All of the vehicles Acura sells in the U.S. today are built in the U.S. and the new EV will follow suit, although the brand hasn’t guaranteed that would apply to every future model it releases.
The Acura SUV is expected to be followed by a Honda sedan designed on the same platform that Honda teased at CES with a concept that featured an even more extreme design than the Performance EV. The gullwing 0 Series Saloon features a wedge nose and Kammback rear end that makes it look more like a supercar than a mainstream sedan and is meant to provide sleek aerodynamics that will help stretch the range of its battery pack between charges.
