Tom Petty’s 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible Is For Sale And Might Be A Rocking Deal
You’ll need more than luck to get your hands on this classic car.
A 1965 Ford Mustang convertible owned by Tom Petty is being auctioned at The Quail Auction held by Bonhams in Monterey, Calif., on Aug. 16.
The Mustang is being offered by the estate of the late rock star, who died in 2017.
The Rangoon Red drop-top features a white roof with a deluxe white and red interior and was purchased by Petty in 2002 as a gift for his wife, Dana, according to Best Classic Brands.

“Tommy understood my deep passion for cars, a love that stemmed from being raised near GM’s Fisher Body Plant #1 where my family had a longstanding connection. American-made vehicles held a special place in our hearts,” Dana Petty said.
“So on this memorable Christmas morning, a year and a half after we were married, Tommy orchestrated an unforgettable surprise. As I stepped onto the front porch, a vibrant red Mustang convertible rolled up the driveway, leaving me speechless with its beauty. To my astonishment, Tommy revealed that this stunning car was now ours to enjoy. Its manufacture date, in April 1964, aligned almost perfectly with my birth month and year, May 1964, creating an incredibly special bond between us.”

The Mustang is an early 1964.5 build and was restored prior to Petty’s ownership. It has a 289 V8 with a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed automatic transmission and a Kenwood AM/FM/Cassette player in place of its original radio that was installed by a previous owner.
Bonhams estimates that it will sell for $25,000 to $35,000, which seems on the low side for the model, let alone one with a celebrity ownership pedigree. The high end of that range is about where Hagerty values an example in good condition.
