Acura has confirmed plans to introduce an electric supercar in 2028.

The automaker wrapped up production of the second-generation hybrid NSX at its Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio last fall, but it is already working on its successor.

Honda in 2022 teased two upcoming sports cars, one of which turned out to be a new Prelude.

The other was described as a “flagship” model and shown rendered under a sheet that made it look much like the mid-engine NSX.

During the Monterey Car Week events, where Acura revealed the Performance EV Concept that previews an Ohio-built electric model set to launch in late 2025, global executive vice president Shinji Aoyama told reporters that an electric supercar in the vein of the NSX will be on sale by 2028 using the 0 Series platform that will underpin the production version of the Performance EV.

The platform will also be used for a Honda sedan that’s coming in 2026 and it has been designed to be “thin, light and wise,” although it relies on current battery technology instead of breakthrough solid state cells that Honda says are still five to 10 years away.

“It means to make the platform thinner than existing vehicles. The traditional batteries [we have now] we are trying to make thinner to achieve a low height for the vehicle,” Aoyoama told The Drive.

“Making this thinner also means we can have a larger [passenger] compartment. We are going to introduce a sports model, we may not call it NSX but a kind of NSX type of vehicle in 2028.”

Aoyoama didn’t say where such a model would be built, but with the center for 0 Series production being set up at the Marysville Auto Plant that is adjacent to the Performance Manufacturing Center, it would seem to be a prime candidate.

More information could be on the way soon as the Tokyo Motor Auto Salon show is coming up in October and that’s where the Prelude concept was revealed last year.
