Will went wire to wire.

Team Penske drive Will Power won the IndyCar Grand Prix of Portland in dominant fashion to set up a three race battle for the championship.

Power passed pole-sitter Santino Ferrucci at the first turn and never looked back.

He led every lap, save for during pit cycles, and came home nearly 10 seconds clear of Alex Palou.

Palou came into the race first in the standings ahead of Colton Herta, Scott Dixon and Power, but Dixon’s day and his championship hopes ended on the first lap.

Dixon ran wide to avoid Kyle Kirkwood then came back onto the track and was punted into the fence by Pietro Fittipaldi, who ran over a curb trying to pass and banged into Dixon’s car.

The result dropped Dixon to fifth place in the standings behind Scott McLaughlin and 101 points behind Palou, which isn’t technically an insurmountable amount with three races remaining, but would require things to go poorly for all the four drivers in front of him, including now-second place Power and Herta in third.

The IndyCar Series heads next to the Milwaukee Mile for the first time since 2015 for dual 250-lap races on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 before season finale at Nashville Superspeedway on Sept. 15.
