Its power is almost as high as its price!

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 has been officially rated at 815 hp and 664 lb-ft, making it the most powerful engine Ford has ever offered in a production vehicle.

With it, the $325,000 endurance racing-inspired car will be able to hit a top speed of 202 mph.

That matches the claimed top speed of the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which had a 662 hp supercharged 5.8-liter V8.

The big difference is that the GT500 had a relatively streamlined body while the GTD’s is designed primarily with downforce in mind and has a large rear wing, dive planes and other aerodynamic features. One of them is a drag reduction system that changes the angle of the rear wing to lower its downforce and allow it to reach its top speed on straights.

Ford hasn’t revealed what the top speed in the high downforce setting is, but has said that it can generate 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of downforce at 150 mph. An executive at Multimatic, the racing team and engineering firm that helped design the GTD and will be doing final assembly on it, told American Cars And Racing that the maximum velocity in this mode might be around 187 mph.

Ford will be putting all of the Mustang GTD’s features to the ultimate test by going for an official lap time at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife race track. The car has already been spotted testing at the 13-mile-long track several times. Ford says the goal is to break the seven-minute mark, which would make the Mustang GTD the fastest American car to ever lap it. No word on exactly when that will happen, if it hasn’t already, but a result should be coming sometime this fall.
