Prime time has come to an end.
Toyota has unveiled the 2025 editions of its plug-in hybrid Rav4 and Prius models, which used to be called the Rav4 Prime and Prius Prime, but now have more descriptive names:
Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid and Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Clever, huh?
“The switch to the RAV4 Plug-in name is intended to help consumers more easily identify the powertrain choices among RAV4 models,” Toyota explained in a news release. “In addition to the model naming change, the Toyota logo on the front and rear of the vehicle will no longer have a blue ‘halo’ within.”

Aside from the new names, the vehicles get new badges that say PHEV, for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, but remain otherwise the same as the 2024 models.
The Rav4 features an all-wheel drive system with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors that cranks out 302 hp, making it the most powerful model in the lineup. The Prius is also the top model, but has a front-wheel drivetrain based around a 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

Despite that, the Rav4 is rated at 38 mpg in hybrid mode and has an all-electric range of 42 miles per charge, while the Prius can go 44 miles in EV mode and gets 52 mpg in hybrid mode.
Prices for the Rav4 Plug-in Hybrid will start at $45,260 when deliveries begin this fall. Pricing and timing on availability for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid has not yet been announced. Both plug-in hybrids are imported from Japan, but are among the top sellers in their segments.
