The Most Powerful Hurricane Engine Is A Cat 3 … For Now

The forecast calls for power.

Dodge is releasing a line of HurriCrate crate motors based on the “Hurricane” 3.0-liter straight-six turbo that’s coming to the Charger next year and is currently an option in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand/Wagoneer.

Dodge and the other Stellantis brands are moving away from V8 engines in favor of this new inline-six-cylinder and hopes custom and race car builders will come along for the ride.

The engines are available in a Cat 1 version rated at 420 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque and a Cat 3 version with 550 hp and 531 lb-ft.

Dodge notes that the Cat 3 has a power density of 183 hp per liter, which is higher than the 900 hp 6.2-liter supercharged V8’s in a Challenger SRT Demon 170. The Cat 1’s 170 hp/liter rating also outmuscles the 807 hp HellCrate Redeye HEMI engine, which is also a supercharged 6.2-liter V8.

The HurriCrates can be ordered from the Direct Connection catalog starting on Aug. 12 and are listed at $10,495 for a Cat 1 and $13,745 for a Cat 3. Direct Connection also offers just the blocks for $7,995 and $11,715, respectively.

Dodge has previously said that it is working on a HurriCrate with more than 1,000 hp, but hasn’t announced plans to put it on sale just yet.

The new Charger is scheduled to to on sale in late 2025 and will be available with the engine in both power ratings. Dodge is calling it the SIXPACK in that application, as a tip of the hat to its classic muscle car motors.

Pricing and performance haven’t been released, but Dodge has confirmed what the 2025 Charger Daytona will cost when deliveries begin in the coming weeks.

The all-electric models are meant to sit atop the lineup and essentially take the place of the discontinued Hellcat and 6.4-liter V8-powered Challengers and Chargers.

The first to go on sale will be a 496 hp Charger Daytona R/T for $61,590 and a 670 hp Charger Daytona Scat Pack for $75,185. Both are all-wheel-drive and the R/T can accelerate to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while the Scat Pack can do it in 3.3 seconds.

They also have a feature called the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust that emulates the sound of a V8 engine.
