The $4 Million Ferrari F80 Will Probably Get Embarrassed By A Chevrolet Corvette

The Ferrari F80 is the most powerful production car the Italian automaker has ever built and a technological tour de force.

The $4 million coupe combines a 900 hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with three electric motors to crank out an impressive 1,184 hp.

The mid-mounted engine and one of the electric motors drives the rear wheels, while the other two electric motors are mounted up front.

Ferrari says the all-wheel-drive hybrid will be able to accelerate to 60 mph in 2.15 seconds and hit an electronically restricted top speed of 217 mph (which is a rounder 350 kilometers per hour).

That beats the similar $2.5 million McLaren W1 that was recently revealed with a 1,258 hp hybrid system that uses a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and electric motor that send their combined power only to the rear wheels. It can accelerate to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and its top speed is also limited to 217 mph.

Ferrari is building 799 F80s and McLaren 399 W1s and they are all pre-sold, but if you’re looking for a fast hybrid car there’s one on the way that might make them both look slow.

Chevrolet announced this week that the upcoming 1,064 hp Corvette ZR1 has a top speed of 233 mph, making it the fastest car ever from a major American automaker. It will also be able to cover a quarter-mile in less than 10 seconds, although the official time has not yet been confirmed. But Chevy is already working on the next Corvette.

Prototypes that have been spotted testing at the Nürburgring race track in Germany show that it is a hybrid, which appears to combine the ZR1’s powertrain with the front electric motor from the Corvette E-Ray. That could make it a 1,224 hp car before they even crank up the power of either motor. Trademarks suggest it will be called the Corvette Zora.

Considering the 655 hp Corvette E-Ray can sprint to 60 in 2.5 seconds a two-second time isn’t out of the question for the Corvette Zora, while there’s no reason its top speed won’t stay nearly the same. Regardless of the final numbers, its performance should be in the same league as the F80 and W1, if not better, and the price will surely be much less.

Chevrolet hasn’t announced Corvette ZR1 pricing yet, but a fully-loaded Corvette Z06 tops out around $160,000, so it should start around there. The Corvette Zora could also come in under $200,000, but it definitely won’t be in the millions.
