Ford just announced yet another step toward making life with an electric vehicle as easy as possible.

The automaker has teamed up with Google to integrate EV-specific navigation tools into Google Maps.

Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners will now be able to get navigation information that incorporates the. status of their vehicles into it, so it can predict how much charge you’ll have left at the end of your trip and suggest charging stops along the way.

It can also locate the Tesla Superchargers that are compatible with the Fords and put the battery pack into a pre-conditioning mode that will allow them to take the fastest charge possible when they arrive.

The feature works through the Android Auto smartphone integration that is standard on the vehicles and doesn’t require any subscription to use, you just have to go into the Google Maps settings and select the type of vehicle you are driving and you’re good to go.

The one downside is that it doesn’t currently work through Apple CarPlay, so iPhone users are out of luck for now, but the built-in navigation systems have similar capabilities.

The new capability contrasts with GM’s approach, which was to remove Android Auto and Apple CarPlay from its electric vehicles and offer navigation that can do these sorts of things through Google Built-In, which requires an active subscription to operate.

Ford offering nearly identical functionality without a subscription could prove to be a selling point against models from GM, which justify Google Built-In through its integration with the powertrain. However, GM does include several years of service with the purchase of its vehicles.
