The two-door 4Runner is back!

The Toyota Motorsports Garage has converted the new 2025 4Runner into a two-door with a removable top that hearkens back to the early 4Runners.

The 4Runner was last offered as a two-door in 1993 and the all-new model only comes with four and a fixed roof, but Toyota decided to have some fun with it for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

“The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser,” said Marty Schwerter, lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center in Texas.

“We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.”

Schwerter’s team started with a 4Runner TRD Limited and shortened the wheelbase, removed the rear doors and added two inches of width to the body. The removable roof uses 3D printing and is light enough for one person to take off.

The interior is trimmed in waterproof wood flooring and water resistant upholstery and has a “Travel Quiver” for surfboards.

The chassis has also been modified with billet aluminum control arms, custom front axles, upgraded steering, the rear end housing from a Toyota Tundra and a set of 17-inch wheels with 37-inch tires. A massive bash plat and brush bar with LED lights toughens up the front of the truck. Power comes from the 4Runner’s standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s rated at 278 hp and 317 lb-ft and highlighted by throwback Turbo decals.

Toyota isn’t planning to offer a two-door or topless 4Runner from the factory, at least not yet, but the project shows what’s possible for an ambitious builder.
