General Motors and Formula 1 have reached an agreement in principal for the automaker to enter the series as an eleventh manufacturer in 2026.

The team will be called the Cadillac Formula 1 Team and run in partnership with TWG Global, the company that now controls Andretti Global racing operation.

GM and Andretti Global initially announced their intentions to form a team in January of 2023, but their application was initially rejected by Formula One in January of this year.

Since then, Michael Andretti has stepped back from management of Andretti Global and Formula One said that the the group has “achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the eleventh team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process and will provide further updates in due course.

“As the pinnacle of motorsports, F1 demands boundary-pushing innovation and excellence. It’s an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s premier racing series, and we’re committed to competing with passion and integrity to elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a news release. “This is a global stage for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technology leadership at an entirely new level.”

Racing legend and 1978 Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti will serve as a director on the team’s board.

“My first love was Formula 1 and now – 70 years later – the F1 paddock is still my happy place,” Andretti said. “To still be involved at this stage of my life — I have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming.”

GM and TWG Global have already been assembling a team in anticipation of eventually getting approval to enter F1 and will operate out of facilities in Fishers, Ind., Charlotte, N.C., Warren, Mich., and Silverstone England.

“The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team,” Michael Andretti wrote in a post on X. “I’m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!”

Formula 1 is switching to an all-new car for 2026, which makes it an ideal entry point for a new team. Ford is also joining the sport as a powertrain partner to Red Bull Racing that year.

GM did not say what powertrain it will use in its first seasons, but it should have an in-house unit read for 2028.

Formula One has run 10, two-car teams since 2017.
